Dear Friend of the Sea,

I have some exciting news to share with you: We're closer than we've ever been to establishing a national ocean policy.

Just last week, our very own Executive Vice President, Dr. Dennis Takahashi-Kelso, was the conservation expert asked to testify before the Senate Commerce Committee on the need for a comprehensive ocean plan.

And next month, the Ocean Policy Task Force that President Obama created will report out on a plan to protect our ocean and use it wisely. I'm proud of the role Ocean Conservancy — and our colleagues in the marine conservation field — have played in this task force, and look forward to December 9th, when the recommendations will be sent to the President.

This progress is truly a testament to the momentum we've worked together to build for establishing order in our ocean — we couldn't have come this far without you. The next step is for Congress and the President to act on our science-based recommendations, and I'll be sure to keep you updated with actions you can take to help make a national ocean policy a reality.

Right Whales

Did You Vote for a Right Whale Name?

Recently, we asked our Facebook fans to help us name a right whale. We are a member of the North Atlantic Right Whale Consortium, and one of our responsibilities is to name right whales so they can be easily identified in the water. The Consortium has voted and we are eagerly awaiting the results. Become a Facebook fan today and be one of the first to find out if our name was a winner »
