Ten Day Countdown to World Ocean Day with the Top Ten Reasons to Celebrate and Save Our Ocean

As World Ocean Day approaches on June 8 we are reminded of the importance of our ocean - an incredible resource. Over the next ten days, leading up to World Ocean Day, we will explore our top ten reasons to celebrate and save our ocean. Join us on Facebook or Twitter and be sure to let us know what you think each day and why you feel the ocean is important to you! We love getting your ideas!

Check back each day as we share our top ten reasons to celebrate and save our ocean.

  1. Reason #1 we love the ocean: The ocean sustains us. We need a new awakening of ocean environmentalism in America. We cannot let "out-of-sight, out-of-mind" shape public consciousness, because what lies beneath the ocean's surface sustains us, providing food, oxygen, and the climate we need to survive. We need a new approach that puts the health of our ocean first. Sign our petition that asks just that of President Obama today »

  2. Reason #2 we love the ocean: Wonders never cease. No matter how much we explore the depths of our ocean, beautiful and fantastical creatures beyond human imagination are still being discovered. Check out these stunning images of the ocean, and add one to your desktop for a daily dose of ocean inspiration. Don't forget to share this with your friends and family so they too can enjoy the beauty beneath the surface!

  3. Reason #3 we love the ocean: The earth's air conditioner is a [polar] 'bear' necessity. There are our bare necessities as humans: shelter, food, water, love. The earth needs a healthy ocean AND a healthy Arctic to survive. The Arctic serves as the earth's air conditioner. 4. Reason #4 we love the ocean: It takes a village. Recovery and restoration begin in the community. We must listen to those who depend on local fisheries in the Gulf to identify critical areas and shape the plan for recovery. 5. Reason #5 we love the ocean: The ocean provides for us. It provides half of the oxygen in every breath we take, water, food, economic support and of course endless beauty. But it can't stop there, we need to provide for the ocean. We need a plan for the many uses it provides. Read more about our push for smart planning for our ocean and coasts »

  6. Reason #6 we love the ocean: One creature's trash is another creature's treasure. That is to say, one slug’s discarded shell can be a perfect fit for a hermit crab in need of shelter in a roomier home. What we don’t love: marine debris. Most items discarded by humans in the ocean are bad news for the animals that live there. Read more about our annual International Coastal Cleanup »

  7. Reason #7 we love the ocean: It's a sanctuary. And we must keep it that way. In California, we're working to ensure marine protected areas serve as sanctuaries for critical and delicate ecosystems that so many amazing creatures call home. 8. Reason #8 we love the ocean: It's mmm mmm good. Whether you eat sustainable seafood or stick to seaweed salads, the ocean is a delicious resource - and a critical one too. More animal protein in the world's diets comes from the ocean than any other source which is why it's so important to respect our ocean and live sustainably. 9. Reason #9 we love the ocean: It inspires passion. Here at Ocean Conservancy, we're so fortunate to have passionate ocean advocate Philippe Cousteau working with our team of leading experts and scientists to help conserve our ocean and guide our science-based restoration efforts in the Gulf. 10. Reason #10 we love the ocean: The ocean is speaking to us. Can you hear it? Just listen. It is sick, and it needs our help. It is a life force that cools our planet, provides us with food and water, & regulates our climate.
